Press Release Body = Absolute pitch (AP) is the ability to identify a note by name
without hearing a reference note and the ability to sing any note without a
reference tone. So once a person has absolute pitch, it is an easy transition to
hear chords, scales and play by ear.

Many school bandrooms have seen jealousy rise when a student is singled out with
this rare gift. Competition is fierce among musicians and anyone blessed with a
\"better\" ear can be seen as the enemy to an ambitious musician without absolute
pitch. The good news is absolute pitch can be learned.

For many years there has been a controversy about the ability to learn absolute
pitch. Skepticism naturally arises when some people seem to have absolute pitch with
no effort. And among musicians, people who have learned absolute pitch at a later
age in life are rare. This is because, until now, there has not been a reliable
method to teach absolute pitch.

A few people have tried to teach absolute pitch in the past. And without the latest
research in brain science, they managed mainly to frustrate people - which leads to
the first obstacle in learning absolute pitch. It is important to be stress-free and
relaxed while ear training.

The middle brain, also called the Mammalian Brain, controls emotions, sexuality and
the immune and hormonal systems. It is the site of long term memory and this
explains why the memory of emotionally rich events is generally long term and
powerful. However, when stressed, the middle brain will not release information into
the neo-cortex, or higher brain, which controls our ability to reason, develop
language and conceive abstract ideas. It \"makes sense\" of the input we receive from
the senses. If you are stressed while ear training, your language will not connect
to your sensory experience of pitch and you will not be able to connect the names of
pitches to the experience of pitch.

The next step of learning absolute pitch is to relearn how to listen. Even musicians
take sound for granted. Musicians learn dynamics, pitch, and tempo but there are
many aspects of sound that go unnoticed. The location of sound is largely ignored.
You will rarely see musicians experiment with placement of sound in space. And the
most ignored distinction of sound is silence. Musicians learn how to play but rarely
do they learn how not to play. Starting with silence and making ever greater
distinctions of sound is key to learning absolute pitch and to the mastery of sound
and music.

The final step is to learn pitch conversationally, as if you were learning a
language. Using call and response, repetition, and mimicry, an absolute pitch
student can demonstrate that having a pitch memory is, at first, possible. Then an
increase in competence will quite naturally lead to full blown absolute pitch.
